Managing for Meaning

One common complaint from managers about Millennials is, “Why is it that what motivated me isn’t motivating them?” To fully understand the answer to this question, you have to travel back in time to see how the other generations were raised. By looking at the stark differences that have wired the Millennial mindset, you can see why this generation is so hungry for meaning, above almost all else, in their work.

Millennials are always going to hunt for a job in which they are making a difference, but the way it’s manifested can take a variety of forms. They can be making a positive impact on people’s lives, animals’ lives, or the community at large. It can be as big as contributing to the fight against climate change or as small as paying forward a cup of joe. Whatever the case may be, Millennials need to know: Do I make a difference in my work? Do I matter? Because if that answer is no, it’s going to be nigh impossible for them to get out of bed in the morning.
